HIV FROM ORAL ON A WOMAN

QUESTION
Can a person get HIV from performing oral sex on a woman?

ANSWER
In general, exposing a healthy mouth to HIV is a low risk activity. It's very unlikely that you could get HIV from oral sex on a woman, although there has been speculation that oral sex during menstruation with an HIV-infected woman could be a riskier sexual activity than when she's not menstruating. You can, however, get other STDs from performing oral sex on a woman, including syphilis, if she is infected. For an easy reference check out the City Clinic STD Basics risk chart.

To your health,
Dr. K
